Shrewsbury Fire Stations
Faced with rapidly growing residential development, the Fire Chief developed a strategic plan for much needed facilities improvements, with the goal of providing adequate coverage and response times to all parts of town. A new Fire Headquarters to replace the existing overcrowded building was the centerpiece of the strategic plan. Located at the town center, in the historic district, the new building consists of a 5,000 SF garage for apparatus and an 11,000 SF administration wing that includes offices on the first floor and living quarters on the second floor. The other components of the strategic plan and the project was a full renovation of a satellite station and the construction of a new third station. Select a view Headquarters | Station 3 | Zoom

Holden Municipal Light Building
At the location of the old Chaffins School, this new facility for the local utility company consists of 10,000SF of office space and 6,000SF of vehicular storage space. The design challenge was to provide a functional facility for vehicles and staff that was sensitive to its residential context. Siting, vehicular access, exterior materials, scale, and massing were carefully considered to meet the Light Department’s needs and to be sympathetic to the neighborhood. Conant Public Library
The Conant Public Library consisted of the original 19th century building and a less than successful 1988 addition. Water infiltration and program space limitations triggered the need for renovations. The scope of the study and the renovation project included site and building systems improvements to solve water infiltration and air quality problems, improve accessibility for the disabled, and meet expanding space needs of the library. The very restrictive site and the building’s location at the bottom of a steep hill proved challenging to drainage design. Without significantly expanding the existing footprint, interior space was added by filling in an existing two story space and an exterior recessed entry space. Emerson School
The Town of Bolton was in desperate need of additional classroom space. They opted to completely renovate the 1972 wing of an old school building. The scope of renovation work included complete demolition and re-building of the interior to create 10 new classrooms, a media center, and a special needs classroom. All new plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems, re-roofing, new windows and skylights, and new gymnasium flooring were also included. Subject to an accelerated schedule, this design-build project required close coordination and teamwork with the Town, acting as the general contractor. Select a view Before | After |

Americal Civic Center
Through a Community Block Development Grant administered by DHCD, the Town of Wakefield received funds to make the Americal Civic Center accessible to the disabled. The function of the original building was an armory. The scope of renovation work included a new elevator, interior egress stairway, entrance ramp, new handicapped bathrooms, and office re-configurations. The building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, requiring that exterior modifications receive approval from the Massachusetts Historical Commission. |

Stevens Pond Pavilion
Stevens Pond is a popular town beach run by the North Andover Park and Recreation Department. The old bathhouse had fallen into disrepair and was closed by the Board of Health. To save on construction cost, the new facility was built on the old concrete foundations. The floor was raised above the existing concrete slab to provide space for new piping and to eliminate the need to repair or replace the old slab. The exposed wood structure utilizes several species of wood. Ipe columns, beams, and floor decking provide exceptional structural capacity and durability while requiring no maintenance. Fir was used for protected roof beams and decking to reduce costs without sacrificing quality. And vertical cedar boards and railing enclose the structure and provide superior weathering characteristics. The very abbreviated design and construction schedule was successfully met to allow use of the facility with the opening of the summer swimming season. |

Engine 29
Engine 29, an active fire station in Brighton, MA, was urgently in need of rejuvenation. Exterior masonry walls were re-pointed and lintels replaced to eliminate extensive leaks. Damaged limestone decorative trims were replaced with cast stone pieces to preserve the historic appearance of the building. In such poor condition that their operation was a hazard to the firefighters, existing windows were replaced with custom wood windows. Interior work included providing new unisex locker, shower, and toilet facilities. |

Parker Road Preschool
The Parker Road Preschool integrates special needs students with normally developing children in a very successful educational program. It shares its site and space in an old public school building with the Special Education Department and Shrewsbury Cable Television. As the school was in desperate need of additional classroom space, a study was conducted to evaluate costs and benefits of various approaches to expansion. A total of 13 design schemes of various scales, including new construction, were explored. In the end, the School Committee opted for a modest 5-classroom addition because of the limitations of the site to support a significant increase in the student population. In the design process, a variance was sought and granted by the Massachusetts State Building Code Appeals Board. |

Shrewsbury Police Boathouse
Sited in the waters of Lake Quinsigamond, this project required Massachusetts DEP waterways license under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 91. The building consists of driven wood piles, wood beams, planking, cedar siding, and a standing seam metal roof. The open air structure was designed to withstand interior and uplifting wind loads as well as normal exterior wind loads. |
